Social and educational responsibility of Spanish television channels in the news coverage of tragic events. From fake news to post-truth
Keywords:
Journalism, mass media, television, news, ethicsAbstract
In 2011, an event happened that convulsed Spanish society: the possible removal of newborns in hospitals in Spain to be given for irregular adoption. The parents of these abducted children, however, had been told that they had passed away. This phenomenon has caused numerous affected people to have filed complaints with the courts and police stations, requesting clarification of the facts.
For this reason, the informative treatment, the social and educative responsibility that public television channels, that is to say of state and regional authorities, have in the coverage of tragic events such as the case of stolen babies will be studied. The television channels Televisión Española, the state government network, and Canal Sur Televisión have been analyzed.
As of 2012, the greatest wave of exhumations with respect to this topic occurs, and that is when a greater informative bombardment begins on television in Spain, which is why this date has been chosen as the starting point for the analysis. Several reports and news that these televisions offered from this date to the present will be investigated and the techniques used will be analyzed, as well as the existence or absence of journalistic ethics, the use of sensationalism , the appearance of fake news, how they influence the construction of the post-truth and the relevance that the media literacy has in the media.
From the methodological point of view, a quantitative work has been carried out using the SPSS statistical program in Social Sciences in its latest version, analyzing 25 audiovisual programs and documents that deal with the topic addressed in this research.
