Student’s skills in using reading strategies in order to understand written texts, as well as their metacognitive ability, were evaluated in this work; the latter was determined by means of the correlation between the level of the actual performance they shown and the level in which they placed themselves according to their own perception. It was found that the students shown an acceptable level of development in the skills needed to carry out summaries, however, in the other two skills evaluated (underlying and using graphic organizers) a great deal of them did not reach an acceptable level of development. On the other hand, a low correlation between the results of the Executive and the Self-descriptive Scales of the instrument was evident, which demonstrates that the students present difficulties in their metacognitive ability.
