One of the tendencies of research in the ambit of Computer Sciences Applied to Education is the one that promotes communication, coordination, cooperation and - in some situations - collaboration in the processes of teaching and learning. The software systems developed under this approach are known by the name of Collaborative Virtual Environments.
This paper describes the characteristics of the collaborative learning paradigm, as well as the main computational areas in which the development of such systems is sustained. The characteristics of four representative projects of the environments mentioned are also included, and new lines of work are outlined.
