Abstract

This paper compares two of the most important theories in the field of vocational psychology. Holland's theory of vocational choice and the Minnesota theory of work adjustment (MTWA). The former is considered a typological or classificatory theory, while the latter is essentially a trait theory. The principles, approaches and instruments of both theories are contrasted in order to determine their similarities and differences. The advantages and limitations in the use of these theories for career counseling are also pointed out.

It is concluded that these theories are not contradictory and that they both study a psychological phenomenon. It is suggested that the general and simplistic character of the model proposed by Holland is useful in the orientation of young people at the middle and high school level of education, while the more comprehensive and laborious work adjustment theory of Minnesota is more useful in the evaluation of individuals with work problems.

Two of the dominant theories in the field of career counseling are John l. Holland's vocational choice theory (1985) and the Minnesota theory of work adjustment (MTWA) proposed by Rene V. Dawis and Lloyd H. Lofquist (1984).
